Wilmington University Criminal Justice Institute’s Animal Control Officer’s Academy

Welcome to Introduction to Animal Cruelty Investigations at the Wilmington University Criminal Justice Institute’s Animal Control Officer’s Academy.

Throughout this course, the various aspects of an animal cruelty investigation will be explored. It is important to understand the role of an animal cruelty officer in an investigation as the officer serves to protect the community by following laws and ordinances relating to the treatment of animals. The conduct of an officer must be ethical, moral, and professional.

An animal cruelty investigation must follow legal standards to ensure the investigation is conducted in a fair manner, following all policies and procedures. Interviews, searches, evidence collection, and sometimes animal seizures will be a few of the many facets that must be initiated and completed during the investigative process.

Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that animal owners are upholding their daily responsibilities so animals do not experience unethical treatment such as abuse, neglect, or cruelty.
